Getting tires for the saab has been unexpectedly complicated at every step of the journey. But today they finally came.

The tires I originally ordered, the BFG Radial A/T 155R15 tires went on backorder, and nobody, anywhere in the country, could find a set of four. Oh well. So I went for my second choice, the Firestone F560 155R15 tires. These too were out of stock most places I checked, even online. But I sourced some from an ebay seller.

Today they arrived. But only two of them. So I figured I might as well get them mounted, so I went to the nearest Pep Boys and had them get to work. It took them a while to get to work. And the mechanics couldn’t figure out how to get the car into reverse. All of this time wasting had the benefit that, suddenly, the other two tires appeared on my porch in the meantime. So I brought those over and got all four tires mounted.

The good news is these new tires are awesome compared to the crap that had been on there. Even though they’re only slightly narrower than the 165s, steering effort has been reduced an astonishing amount. They ride a bit better too. The bad news is I found out two of my rims are warped, and the mechanic tried to counteract this as much as is possible by using a multitude of wheel weights inside and outside of the rims, and he mounted those wheels on the back just to be sure.

Best of all though is that next time it rains, this won’t happen:

(PS: I’m amused this video has thumbs down on youtube)

I am following your Saab story with interest. Is the video above an indication of your desperate need for new tyres?

Yes. That happened with the old tires, they had plenty of tread, but turned old and hard couldn’t grip worth shit in the rain, even with reduced tire pressure.

Tires are a big interest of mine, but not the stupid rubber bands that people stick on cars nowadays. I miss the days of a stock set of 70-series tires that gave an extra bit of grip as well as a decent ride.

Here is a link to Hot Rod Garage where the guy takes off the “skinnies” and puts on the largest tires and rims he can fit under the wheel wells and I think they’re too big, and ruin the stock look.
